Alberta Independence: What Do Albertans Really Think? New Poll Reveals Surprising Results (2026)

Imagine this: a province considering a bold move to break away from its nation. But here's the twist - most Albertans seem to be having second thoughts.

A recent poll by the Angus Reid Institute reveals an intriguing scenario. Despite the buzz around Alberta independence, a whopping 65% of Albertans surveyed lean towards staying put in Canada. That's a significant majority!

But here's where it gets controversial. Almost a third (29%) of Albertans still favor separation. And this is the part most people miss - a substantial chunk (8%) of those in favor of separation are undecided, leaving the door open for potential change.

Shachi Kurl, president of the Angus Reid Institute, highlights the heart of the matter: "It's this 20% of Albertans who are leaning towards leaving that will be the battleground. Will they ultimately decide to leave, or will they tip back towards staying?"

The poll also sheds light on the reasons behind these preferences. Those in favor of separation believe Alberta deserves more autonomy, especially over its natural resources. On the other hand, those who want to stay cite economic challenges and a strong Canadian identity.

And this is where it gets really interesting. If Alberta were to become independent, a majority (74%) of those who want to stay say they'd move to another province, while only a quarter (23%) would stay put.

The poll also reveals a fascinating political divide. While 93% of Alberta NDP voters want to remain in Canada, the United Conservative Party (UCP) base is more divided, with 41% leaning towards leaving and 16% definitely voting to leave.

So, what's the takeaway? Well, it's clear that the debate over Alberta's future is far from over. With a petition gathering signatures for a potential referendum, the outcome remains uncertain. But one thing's for sure - this issue has the potential to spark passionate discussions and differing opinions.

What do you think? Should Alberta stay or go? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
