A Celebration of Creativity: Unveiling the Talents of Blackpool's Artists with Learning Difficulties
Art knows no bounds, and these artists are breaking barriers!
In a heartwarming initiative, gifted artists, both with and without learning difficulties, have been given a platform to showcase their unique talents. The Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool, England, has opened its doors to a diverse range of creators, offering them a series of exclusive showcases for their extraordinary work.
But here's where it gets controversial...
The pARTnership program at the gallery has been a game-changer, providing a supportive environment for artists to thrive. For seven years, these talented individuals have been participating in weekly artist-led workshops, sharing skills, ideas, and developing new works. The results? Their creations have been exhibited not just locally, but nationally and internationally, gaining recognition and admiration.
This year, three painters took their success to new heights by selling their works to private collectors at The Manchester Contemporary Art Fair. It's a testament to the power of inclusive learning and the vibrant cultural community that nurtures these artists.
Gallery curator, Paulette Brien, beautifully captures the essence of this season's exhibition: "It celebrates the true creativity, passion, and ambition of the brilliant artists right here in our community." She adds, "Their success at Manchester Contemporary is a shining example of what can be achieved when we embrace diversity and provide a platform for all talents."
And this is the part most people miss...
Among the talented artists is Dawn Ward, whose work, "DAWN and TONY," is currently on display at the Grundy Forecourt Gallery. Dawn's work is a heartfelt tribute to the language of love and matrimony, inspired by her relationship with fellow artist, Tony Holmes, who passed away in 2024. She expresses, "My work keeps me connected to Tony, and I feel a deep connection to all my creations. I'm proud of the hard work and the art I've brought to life."
Blackpool Council leader, Lynn Williams, praises the pARTnership program, calling it a "pioneering project" that brings people together, boosts confidence, and opens doors to new opportunities. She emphasizes, "The success of our artists at Manchester Contemporary is a source of pride for our entire town, showcasing the incredible talent that resides within our community."
The Grundy Art Gallery's program, including "DAWN and TONY," will be on display until December 20th. Additionally, the gallery presents "The Art About Town" trail, featuring 14 large posters at tram and bus stops, and "After the Archive," a multi-disciplinary exhibition inspired by archive images, showcasing painting, collage, video, installation, photography, and sculpture from emerging artistic voices in Barrow and Blackpool.
