The recent actions of a Chinese fighter jet, which involved dropping flares dangerously close to a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) surveillance aircraft, have ignited considerable outrage. This incident, which took place in international airspace over the South China Sea, has been labeled as "highly risky" by a prominent minister in the Labor government. Just one day prior, Australia had officially registered its protest concerning this serious event.
On Sunday, the Chinese jet's release of flares near the RAAF plane was not merely an alarming sight but also a clear demonstration of China’s intent to project its military strength and assert territorial claims in the contested region. Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, did not sugarcoat the implications of this display, asserting that Australia remains committed to upholding its rights to fly and navigate freely, which is vital for national security. "We urge China to recognize that this behavior is not just unprofessional, but it carries significant risks, and we will steadfastly maintain our rights in both international waters and airspace," Wong remarked, emphasizing the priority of safety for Australian defense personnel.
In contrast, Defense Minister Richard Marles referred to flare drops as typical conduct between military aircraft. However, he also acknowledged the troubling nature of the incident due to the proximity of the flares to the Australian aircraft. "From a distance, flares can serve as a form of communication, signaling awareness of each other's presence. But if the distance is too short, it escalates the potential for danger, which is precisely what happened in this instance when the flares were deployed too close on two occasions, making it necessary for us to address this issue," Marles explained.
Fortunately, the crew of the RAAF's P-8A maritime patrol aircraft returned safely, and no damage was reported. Nevertheless, the Australian government felt it essential to formally convey its discontent to Beijing by lodging a diplomatic protest. Marles stressed the importance of maintaining clear and consistent communication in military interactions, noting that incidents deemed unsafe will be publicly addressed.
"Australia actively engages in asserting the principles of a rules-based order in the South China Sea, and let’s be clear, this is not merely a symbolic gesture. The vast majority of Australia’s trade routes pass through this area, and adherence to international regulations is crucial for our national interests," he added.
While there is frequent interaction between Australian and Chinese defense forces, most of these encounters occur under safe and professional conditions, promoting an understanding of mutual respect.
A spokesperson for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) reiterated that they expect all nations, including China, to conduct their military operations with safety and professionalism. "For decades, the ADF has been conducting maritime surveillance missions in this region, strictly adhering to international law and exercising our rights for freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters and airspace," the spokesperson stated. "It is imperative that all maritime claims align with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea."
