A Couple's Stylish and Modern Sydney Abode
Imagine finding your dream home when you least expect it. This was precisely the experience of Phoebe Abbott, an interior stylist who had been comfortably settled in her rental property in Sydney. Despite her contentment, she maintained a keen interest in the real estate market, always on the lookout for potential opportunities. One day, while browsing property listings, she stumbled upon a charming home in Leichhardt.
"We weren’t actively searching for a new place, but I persuaded my partner, Mick Lakin, to join me for a quick look," Phoebe recalls. "After a bit of convincing, he finally agreed, and we scheduled a visit for Saturday. To our surprise, we were the only ones who showed up for the inspection that day, which meant we had the entire house to ourselves. It was love at first sight!"
By the end of their tour, Mick was already trying to convince Phoebe that they needed to make the move.
The couple feels incredibly fortunate to have found such a wonderful home. "We feel so lucky to live here," Phoebe expresses with genuine gratitude.
Before it hit the rental market, this Leichhardt house—originally built in the 1930s—underwent a significant renovation by Lintel Studio. The redesign introduced a highly functional and compact layout infused with playful elements.
"It embodies a contemporary minimalist style that avoids feeling cold or lifeless, thanks to the clever use of textures, ample natural light, and preserved original features like decorative moldings," Phoebe explains.
These historical elements are beautifully contrasted with vibrant accents and unconventional materials. For instance, a striking red carpet runs along the staircase to the main bedroom, while the kitchen boasts a stylish terrazzo benchtop.
As an interior stylist, Phoebe draws inspiration from the existing aesthetic of her home. She has embraced Lintel Studio’s design principles, opting for clean, thoughtful decor that complements the home’s innate charm. "My approach to styling this space reflects its elegant simplicity, with furniture that resonates with the warmth of the wooden details and the subtle hints of green from the courtyard garden," she shares.
With plenty of time to curate her space, Phoebe finds the process of styling her own home more enjoyable and straightforward than working with clients. "When styling for myself, I know exactly what I like and dislike. There’s no pressure, expectations, or formalities involved," she elaborates. "In client work, my role is to assist them in discovering their personal style and identity within their home or venue."
Ultimately, what matters most to Phoebe and Mick is the sense of peace their home brings them. Located on a quiet street just a few blocks away from Leichhardt’s bustling main thoroughfare, arriving home feels like stepping into a sanctuary where they can leave their worries behind.
"This home truly offers a comforting embrace and a chance to exhale," Phoebe adds. "It creates a space where your mind feels clear, your body feels unburdened, and a serene tranquility flows throughout the area."
But here's where it gets interesting: What do you think makes a house feel like a home? Is it the decor, the location, or perhaps the memories created within its walls? Share your thoughts!
