Natasha Kirkpatrick, a teacher from Marston Moretaine, shares how her own daughter, Ellaria, was saved by a cord blood transplant, a few years after she donated her newborn's cord blood.

In 2017, Natasha made the decision to donate Ellaria's cord blood, a rich source of stem cells, after her birth. Little did she know that this act of kindness would become a life-saving measure for her own child just a few years later.
In 2019, Ellaria was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the tender age of two. Despite chemotherapy, she relapsed, leaving her family facing a daunting challenge.
Originally scheduled for a stem cell transplant in 2022, the procedure was canceled when the donor contracted COVID-19. However, fate intervened, and Ellaria received an emergency cord blood transplant at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
Natasha, now 37, reflects on the significance of her decision: "I knew about cord blood because I'd donated Ellaria's own cord blood when she was born."
Today, Ellaria, now a vibrant eight-year-old, is still being monitored for after-effects that have impacted her heart and brain. Despite these challenges, she thrives in Year 4 at primary school, embracing her passions for music, dancing, and bringing laughter to those around her.
Natasha expresses her gratitude: "I cannot thank the mum who donated the cord blood Ellaria received enough. Without the doctors and without that transplant, she would not be here."

Natasha's story highlights the global impact of cord blood donation. The NHS Blood and Transplant cord blood bank in Filton, Bristol, has issued its 1,000th unit of baby umbilical cord blood for stem cell transplants, making it the fourth largest cord blood bank worldwide, with nearly 20,000 donations available for clinical use.
Alex Ross, head of the NHS Blood and Transplant Cord Blood Bank, emphasizes the unique nature of cord blood donation: "Stem cells from cord blood can be safely stored for years. Your baby may be grown up by the time they save a life, perhaps even older than the recipient - it's a very special way to donate."
Women giving birth at certain hospitals, including University College Hospital, Luton and Dunstable Hospital, and St George's Hospital, have the opportunity to donate their cord blood once the placenta is delivered. This precious gift is then frozen and stored at -196C until a match is found.
