A whirlwind year can change everything! Just a year ago, the narrative surrounding George Pickens was vastly different. Now, as the calendar flips to 2026, he's on the cusp of joining an elite club when he takes the field for the Dallas Cowboys against the New York Giants. This is a complete 180-degree turn from the stories swirling around him just a year ago, and it all comes just weeks before he enters the world of NFL free agency for the first time.
On Sunday, Pickens needs only three more catches and an additional 80 receiving yards to stand alongside CeeDee Lamb and Michael Irvin as the only players in Cowboys history to achieve a season with 95 catches and 1,500 receiving yards. And remember, this is all happening in his first year with the team and under the guidance of four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott.
While the Cowboys' season hasn't been without its challenges, Pickens has undoubtedly turned heads across the league.
"It's super fun, definitely," Pickens shared. "I'll definitely say the season's super fun. It's still going on, though. That'd be excellent company to be in, with those two. But we've just gotta finish it strong and get us a victory."
His chemistry with Prescott, Lamb, and others in the locker room was almost instant, a stark contrast to the unfounded rumors that painted him as difficult or uncommitted to the game.
"[The chemistry] is super important — especially in the brotherhood part," he emphasized. "I feel like if you go on any team or any organization that you're in, if you don't know the people, you'll never really have a good time with them."
Pickens has proven to be a model teammate and professional, with the exception of one missed curfew, and his production has been phenomenal, earning him his first Pro Bowl nod in 2025.
As he wraps up his best season yet, he knows free agency awaits after Week 18. But for now, his focus is solely on the game.
"I'm kind of being where my feet are," Pickens said. "I think not knowing how stuff is gonna go, you kind of want to embrace definitely where you [are]."
But here's where it gets controversial... The offseason is inevitable, and soon Pickens will be in contract negotiations with Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones. They'll have a chance to strike a deal before legal tampering allows other teams to make offers in early March.
Should they fail to agree, the Cowboys could use the exclusive franchise tag on Pickens, even as a placeholder to extend talks until mid-July, without competition from other teams.
And this is the part most people miss... NFL contract negotiations aren't always smooth sailing. Prescott, who's been through his own rounds of negotiations with the Cowboys, has some advice for the young receiver, especially in light of what happened in 2025.
"Don't let it get personal," said the All-Pro quarterback. "At the end of the day, this is business. Both sides are gonna want negotiations. Honestly, me and Jerry's wasn't pretty at all, right? … Things are gonna come up, things aren't gonna sit right [with you]. You're gonna feel slighted when they [offer] you a million or two less than whatever you said, and that's just the business. Play the game. Play back. But don't let it get personal."
Wise words from someone who knows the ins and outs of NFL contract talks. Pickens will let his agent, David Mulugheta, handle the business side.
"I definitely leave that type of stuff to my agent," Pickens said. "I let them talk the deals."
The 24-year-old simply wants to focus on football, a mindset that has helped him become one of the best in the league at his position. Pickens has certainly done his part, dominating on the field in 2025 and earning praise in the locker room. Now, he's about to discover what all of that will bring him in 2026 and beyond.
