Sometimes tough love is the only way to unlock real potential. That’s exactly what Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernández is betting on with Ziaire Williams — a player the team once viewed as a defensive cornerstone, but who’s struggled to live up to that standard this season. And here’s where things get interesting: Fernández’s latest message didn’t come through words, but through benching.
The Nets desperately need Williams to rediscover the defensive fire that made him one of their top stoppers just a year ago. So far, that version of him has been missing. After a string of underwhelming performances, Fernández yanked him from Tuesday’s lineup against the Knicks — his first healthy scratch of the season — in what could only be interpreted as a wake-up call. The question now is whether Williams got the message.
“This is tough because I literally just spoke with him and then didn’t play him,” Fernández told The New York Post. “When he gets another chance, we’ll see if it clicks. If it doesn’t, that’s on me — I have to find another way to help him perform consistently.”
Fernández didn’t mince words about what that consistency should look like. Ball pressure, deflections, pick-and-roll defense, iso coverage — all areas that were elite last season — have taken a dip. “Last year, he was one of the best,” the coach emphasized. “We need that same energy back, or even better, because he’s capable of it.”
And this is where it gets controversial: despite a solid bump in his three-point shooting, Williams hasn’t delivered what the Nets actually re-signed him for — defensive grit. After securing a two-year, $12.5 million contract over the summer, his numbers tell a different story. According to Cleaning The Glass, his defensive rebounding rate has nosedived from the 94th percentile to the 21st. His steal percentage has dropped, and his defensive rating has sunk to a career low, marking an overall regression that’s impossible to ignore.

Earlier in the season, Fernández tried a softer approach — nudging Williams with feedback and encouragement. But that changed this week when he decided to sit him out. “He was elite at the things we care about most — pressuring the ball, creating deflections, stopping isolations,” Fernández explained. “But I haven’t seen that same energy lately, and the numbers back that up. So I felt it was time to challenge him directly.”
For now, the plan seems simple: give someone else an opportunity while pushing Williams to reset mentally and prepare for his next shot. “When it comes,” said Fernández, “he has to grab it and run with it. I believe he can be our best defender — even one of the best in the entire league.”
While Williams still leads the team in deflections, other metrics paint a rough picture. His once-dominant isolation defense has crumbled — opponents who scored just 0.79 points per possession and shot under 40% against him last season are now producing 1.09 points and 50% shooting. Those are alarming jumps for a player supposed to anchor Brooklyn’s perimeter defense. Still, Fernández insists Williams has untapped potential, rivaled only by promising rookie Drake Powell. “Drake has shown he can be elite defensively,” he noted. “And Ziaire can, too. We’ve won some of our best games when he’s locked in.”
Williams, now 24, hasn’t hidden from his shortcomings. Earlier this month, he admitted needing to do better. “I’ve got to be more consistent on my assignments, stay locked in, and not overthink,” he said. “Sometimes I try to do too much — to fix everything in one play. It’s all part of learning.”
As the Nets prepare to face Philadelphia — with Michael Porter Jr. sidelined and several rookies still on G League duty — all eyes will be on whether Williams earns another chance. Can he reclaim his defensive dominance, or is Fernández’s tough-love gamble about to expose deeper problems?
