Muthoni's actions were inspired by her desire to inspire people to fall in love with nature and treat it with care. She emphasized that conservation begins with love and criticized the common practice of replacing Indigenous forests with saplings, which she believes is not true mitigation. According to the State of the World's Trees assessment, Kenya is home to 1,131 tree species, but over 13% are threatened with extinction due to deforestation, climate change, and urbanization. The royal palm she hugged, while not native to Kenya, is an invasive species from the American tropics.
Among Kenya's 49 endemic tree species, many are under threat. Nineteen are endangered, and eight are critically endangered. The Meru oak, for instance, is one of the nation's largest trees, growing up to 35 meters tall, and is found in a few locations, including Mount Kenya. Another endemic tree, Pandanus kajui, plays a crucial role in stabilizing riverbanks in wetland ecosystems but is classified as endangered and found in only five locations.
On December 15th, Kenyan President William Ruto appointed Muthoni as the ambassador for the country's ambitious campaign to plant 15 billion trees, aiming to increase tree cover from 12% to 30% by 2032. Ruto expressed his confidence in Muthoni's impact, stating that her efforts will foster a more positive perception of trees.
Muthoni's dedication to environmental conservation was further recognized on December 17th when she received a full scholarship to Mount Kenya University.
