The music world is reeling from the loss of Rob Hirst, the iconic drummer of Midnight Oil, who passed away at the age of 70 after a courageous fight against pancreatic cancer. Diagnosed with this challenging disease in 2023, Hirst’s battle was publicly acknowledged by him and his bandmates, who shared a heartfelt message on social media, stating, "After fighting heroically for almost three years, Rob is now free of pain - 'a glimmer of tiny light in the wilderness.'" His passing occurred peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, a poignant reminder of the love that enveloped him during his final moments.
In April 2025, Hirst bravely revealed his diagnosis, candidly explaining how the illness affected his ability to play the drums due to respiratory issues. He expressed a desire to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, highlighting its often-overlooked nature. "I wanted to get the story of pancreatic cancer out there, because it’s one of those cancers that most people don’t really register," he explained, showing his commitment to educating others even amid his struggles.
