And this is the part most people miss... The Fair Care Alliance, led by Donna Hais, has been at the forefront of demanding better healthcare for the region. Their efforts have been relentless, with public gatherings and advocacy campaigns, highlighting the stark contrast in healthcare resources between Nanaimo and the greater Victoria area. Around 350 people attended a gathering at Beban Park Society Centre, just before the October 2024 vote, to emphasize their demands for better care levels. Another event, attended by 250 people, marked the anniversary of the government's promise, which went unfulfilled for a year. The stark disparity in healthcare resources between Nanaimo and the south Island was brought to light, with nearly triple the hospital beds, 10 times the cardiologists, five times more gastrointestinal specialists, and four times the adult psychiatrists in Victoria compared to NRGH. Despite the progress, there's a sense of caution among some. Janice Perrino, Chair of the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District, acknowledged the positive news but also noted the district's ongoing preparation for the construction of the tower and cath lab, a project they'll fund 40% of. The district has been proactive in increasing taxes to build up funds for these high-priority projects, aiming to reduce reliance on long-term borrowing. However, the journey towards these improvements has been fraught with delays and unfulfilled promises. The patient tower and cath lab were promised by David Eby during his re-election campaign in 2024, with an initial estimate of around $2 billion and a 10-year completion timeline. Despite the commitment, little has happened since, with the governing BC NDP promoting health care spending in other areas. The long-term care facility project in Lantzville, initially projected for 2027, has also faced delays due to rising costs, with the completion date now set for 2029. As the province moves forward with initial planning, the community remains vigilant, ensuring that the promises made are not just words but tangible actions that address the urgent healthcare needs of Nanaimo and the surrounding areas.
