The future of basketball in Europe is a hot topic, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has some bold plans. In a recent media interaction in Berlin, Silver unveiled his vision for NBA Europe, a project that aims to revolutionize the sport on the continent.
But here's where it gets controversial: Silver revealed that the initial funding for this ambitious venture will come from the member clubs themselves and their investors. He emphasized that profitability won't be immediate, and a long-term perspective is essential.
In his words, "The funding will come from the member clubs of the league, their investors. Launching a new league takes time to become a viable commercial enterprise. Think of the WNBA; we're not suggesting a direct comparison, but we want to create a similar impact in Europe."
Silver also stressed the importance of respecting European basketball traditions, partnering with FIBA, and collaborating with European organizations to preserve the unique identity of the sport.
When asked about the legal threats from EuroLeague, Silver remained optimistic, stating, "I don't see a clash as inevitable. We have the chance to grow the game. We're not competing with other sports or organizations; we're focused on offering an attractive entertainment option."
He confirmed discussions with Real Madrid and ALBA Berlin, praising the latter as a model club. Silver also revealed that Tony Parker, owner of ASVEL, is consulting with the NBA on the NBA Europe project.
In summary, Silver believes that if they build a strong league in Europe, it will gain global attention, just as the NBA did.
