Bold claim: a new traffic safety grant is set to reshuffle enforcement and community safety in Sonora. The Sonora Police Department (SPD) is among local agencies benefiting from funding announced yesterday by the California Office of Traffic Safety, with details reported here.
The department plans to allocate $55,000 to expand DUI checkpoints and patrols focused on impaired driving. Additionally, funding will support enhanced enforcement against cellphone use behind the wheel, speeding, and inattentiveness to pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users.
Beyond enforcement, the grant will enable community outreach on traffic safety issues, collaborative operations with neighboring agencies, and a suite of officer training and certification initiatives. Training tracks include the Standardized Field Sobriety Testing protocol, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Drug Recognition Expert certification.
SPD Officer Shane Theilen expressed appreciation for the grant, noting that it will strengthen traffic enforcement and improve road safety. He added that by targeting high-risk areas and bolstering compliance with traffic laws, the department aims to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes, and make roads safer for all users.
The funding originates from the California Office of Traffic Safety and is administered through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
