Hooker Bongi Mbonambi, previously part of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship squad, was already on standby, ready to step in. Prop Ntuthuko Mchunu, who last donned the Springbok jersey against Portugal in Bloemfontein during the 2024 Castle Lager Incoming Series, is also joining the team.
Coach Rassie Erasmus explained the rationale behind the call-ups: "This is a longer tour than usual, and we have two big matches lined up against Ireland and Wales, which prompted the decision to call up Bongi and Ntuthuko." He further added, "Both players have proven their mettle on the international stage, so we're thrilled to have them back in the fold."
But here's where it gets interesting... Erasmus also pointed out that some players won't be eligible for the final test against Wales due to it falling outside the international window. Therefore, bringing in Mbonambi and Mchunu now allows them to integrate with the team during training this week, and increases the squad's depth.
The Springboks are scheduled to travel from Italy to Dublin on Sunday afternoon, with on-field preparations commencing on Monday. This early integration will be crucial as they face two formidable opponents.
