Paul Thijssen, seen smiling and chatting with his ex-girlfriend Lilie James on a normal day at work, was later revealed to have a dark and violent history. The red flags were there, but his friends failed to see them as signs of a dangerous obsession. Thijssen's obsessive digital surveillance of James' location and his display of an intimate image without her consent were calculated moves to assert dominance, experts say. The tragic outcome came on October 25, 2023, when Thijssen, practicing his murder earlier in the day, barged into a bathroom where James was changing at St Andrew's Cathedral School in Sydney. Using a hammer, he struck her at least 25 times in the head and neck, resulting in her death. An inquest into her death found that James was killed by her ex-boyfriend in the context of domestic violence. State Coroner Theresa O'Sullivan identified critical actions to address technology-facilitated abuse through education, awareness, and bystander intervention. Domestic violence expert Kate Fitz-Gibbon welcomed the findings, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the national crisis of men's violence against women and children. The coroner adopted Fitz-Gibbon's suggestion that domestic violence screening tools should reflect the link between coercive control, technology-facilitated abuse, and physical stalking, and the risk of intimate partner homicide. Stalking, including online, occurred before 41.5% of intimate partner homicides in Australia, according to data. However, a concerning number of people still think it's reasonable to track a partner during relationships, according to the Social Research Centre. This normalization of abusive behaviors online, such as harassment and coercive control, is a cause for alarm, as highlighted by educational organization Teach Us Consent. Chief Executive Chanel Contos emphasized the need for culturally relevant education about technology-facilitated abuse to help young people form healthy relationships.
