The Home of the Phoenix Mercury: A Stadium's Shifting Identity Through Championship Dreams!
Did you know that the very ground where the Phoenix Mercury have celebrated victories and faced tough losses has been known by a surprising number of names? It's a fascinating journey through the team's history, mirroring their own evolution.
When the Phoenix Mercury burst onto the WNBA scene in 1997, they brought with them a wave of excitement, spearheaded by talented players like Bridget Pettis, Jennifer Gillom, and Michele Timms. Their inaugural season was a resounding success, with a strong 16-12 record that propelled them straight into the playoffs. Though their playoff run ended against the New York Liberty and ultimately the Houston Comets, who clinched the championship, the Mercury had certainly made their mark.
For their early years, fans cheered them on at the America West Arena. This was the stage for both triumphs and stumbles. The team reached the Finals again in 1998, experienced a playoff drought in 1999, and then returned to postseason play in 2000. It was during this period of ups and downs, while still playing at America West Arena, that the Mercury found a true game-changer: Diana Taurasi, drafted in 2004.
As Taurasi and her teammates continued to play at America West Arena, the venue itself began a metamorphosis. In 2006, it was rebranded as the US Airways Center. This name graced the arena for several years before another transformation.

In 2015, following a truly remarkable 2014 season where the Mercury finished with an incredible 29-5 record and swept the Chicago Sky to claim their third championship, the arena became known as Talking Stick Resort Arena. Even in 2015, with stars like DeWanna Bonner and Brittney Griner leading the charge, the team posted a solid 20-14 record and made it to the postseason, though they didn't repeat their championship feat. The arena's name remained consistent for a while, but the changes weren't over.
It briefly became the Phoenix Suns Arena, and then, after another renaming, it was known as Footprint Center for a period. The evolution continued, and by the time the Mercury played their 2025 season, the arena was called PHX Arena.
And this is the part most people miss... The most recent change occurred in October 2025, just as the Mercury were facing the Las Vegas Aces in the Finals. The arena was renamed Mortgage Matchup Center.
This season, the Mercury will continue to play at the Mortgage Matchup Center.
