Thessaloniki Film Festival 2023 Winners: Cotton Queen, Beachcomber, and More (2025)

A Powerful Win for 'Cotton Queen' at Thessaloniki Film Festival

In a heartwarming victory, the Sudanese film 'Cotton Queen' directed by Suzannah Mirghani has taken home the prestigious Best Feature Film Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. This triumph is a beacon of hope and recognition in a world often overshadowed by conflict.

The festival's international competition jury, led by filmmaker Elegance Bratton and featuring industry experts Thania Dimitrakopoulou and Frederick Elmes, praised 'Cotton Queen' for its profound message. Bratton's words resonate: "In a world plagued by darkness, this film shines a light on what truly matters—our families and communities."

Set in a Sudanese cotton-farming village, the film tells the story of Nafisa, whose simple life is disrupted by the arrival of a young businessman. It's a narrative that speaks to the resilience of communities and the power of art in challenging times.

Mirghani, accepting the award, expressed gratitude and hope: "This recognition is a beacon of encouragement, especially in these troubled times. It's a testament to the power of art to transcend borders and bring us together."

But here's where it gets controversial... While 'Cotton Queen' took the top prize, other films and performances also shone brightly. The Best Actor Award went to Harry Melling for his role in 'Pillion', while Sabrina Amali won Best Actress for her performance in 'Maysoon'.

And this is the part most people miss... The festival also celebrated emerging talent through its Meet the Neighbors+ and Film Forward sections, recognizing directors, screenwriters, and artistic achievements that push the boundaries of storytelling.
